The Non Dot Drug Test

By Chloe Gib

Non dot drug test refers to the kind of drug test given to those that are employed in positions that do not require screening under the DOT regulations. Companies have flexibility when it comes to the establishment of non-DOT testing procedures and policies. This includes how often the testing should be done and which substances to check for.

The non-DOT screening may not use the COC federal chain of custody but it still uses the same five panel used in DOT testing. The difference between the two is non-DOT also uses a 10 panel or more screening where in depth testing is required. The 10 panel tests is for the following substances; opiates, marijuana, propoxyphene, methadone, methamphetamines, cocaine, methaqualone, benzodiazepines, phencyclidine and barbiturates.

Samples commonly used for instant results kind of testing are saliva or urine. The specimen is enclosed in a cassette style device that has a sterile dropper and results are immediately obtained just like in home pregnancy testing. Obtaining false positive or inconclusive results is quite possible normally due to use of some prescription medicines and this warrants a more in depth lab interpretation.

GC/MS or gas chromatography mass spectrometry is used by a certified technician to analyze specimen sent to the lab. Once the results are out and there are substances above the cut off line, they are then forwarded to MRO where interpretation is furthered. Contacting the patient and the physician who prescribed the substance is done. Hair sample screening is also done using GC/MS which needs a 1.5 inch specimen and where the head hair is not available, other body hair is used but both are cannot be used.

Drug screening of employees takes different turnaround times. All instant screenings usually give on site results that can instantly be called by a collection site to an employer. The period taken for urine screenings that have been sent for examination is normally between one day and seven days. For hair testing results, the amount of time taken is about 3-4 days.

Detection windows differ when it comes to employment screenings. The one that takes the longest frame of time to yield is the hair screening. Prior to collecting specimen the screen should take about 90 days.

Urine testing when carrying out the non dot drug test by a lab using the GC/MS has a window of detection of three to fourteen days. The length of the detection window usually depends on how often the drug is used and its type. A day up to seven days is the detection window of urine or saliva screening prior to the samples being collected.
