DUI Insurance Is Also Known As SR-22 Coverage

By Christina Potter

DUI insurance is a special type of coverage that is offered to individuals that have been convicted of a criminal offense in California. Driving under the influence, which is the full term for the acronym DUI is a serious offense. Individuals that are charged with this offense will generally have their license privileges suspended, and also be forced to carry a different type of insurance coverage as a result.

It goes without saying that illegal drugs and alcohol should never be in a drivers system when they are operating a motor vehicle. However, there are millions of drivers in the state of California that are convicted of this serious offense every single year. Once convicted, drivers may be required to pay fines, serve time in jail, and once released be forced to purchase SR-22 coverage.

After the coverage has been obtained, the company who has given you the coverage you require, will mail a copy of your policy to the motor vehicle department. SR-22 coverage is different from other types of coverage, because it tells the motor vehicle department and the insurer that you are an at risk driver. You will need to render more money for one of these types of policies.

Owning an SR-22 policy will cost a driver more money than owning a traditional policy. But, having to pay more money for the policy is not the only thing that a driver who has been convicted of a DUI offense will have to deal with. Drivers will also be required to meet certain criterion while they are on this type of coverage.

If the coverage does lapse due to non-payment, the driver who has been convicted of driving under the influence may lose their driving privileges again. Drivers who have been convicted of this crime will not only need to obtain a special type of coverage through an insurer, but they will also be subjected to render fines for their wrongdoings as well. Depending on the severity of the crime, an individual may have to serve time in jail for their offense.

Locating an insurer that offers this additional type of coverage is not that difficult to do. Larger insurers will offer SR-22 policies to individuals that require them. The insurer will fax all of the paperwork to the motor vehicles department for you, showing them that you have obtained the required coverage you need to be able to operate a motor vehicle again.

Obtaining a DUI insurance policy is not difficult to do, because larger insurers offer this additional coverage. To help you save some money on the coverage, you should shop around for quotes. As long as you have done everything that the motor vehicle department instructs that you do, your driving privileges should be reinstated with this additional coverage.
