MBA Healthcare and Hospital Administration

By Marx Goodfellow

Most people never get a good idea of what goes on in a hospital. Their view is confined to an emergency room visit or a doctor's visit. What they don't see is a small army of people comprised of nurses, doctors, janitors, maintenance, accountants, security, etc. That doesn't include all the patients and visitors. All of these people have a purpose. There are things they need to get done. The poor soul who is responsible for keeping all the pieces working together without killing one another is the hospital administrator.

If you forget about that fact that hospitals deal with life and death situations on a daily basis which causes a sense of pressure and urgency few jobs can match, the hospital administrator still has a challenging job. Entire departments are competing for finite resources, budget, space and time to accomplish their critical goals, and it's the job of the administrator to coordinate that. In addition, they are responsible for managing the business aspects of the medical facility.

An advanced degree, combined with years of experience, is considered a requisite for hospital administration. While a new degree, the Master of Health Administration (MHA), has a following, the most degree of choice is the Master of Business Administration with a healthcare specialization. The MHA places more emphasis on healthcare policy, and the MBA Healthcare takes a top down approach to all aspects of the business.

Leadership is probably the number one quality required of a hospital administrator. With so many people driven by so much urgency, it is difficult to keep everyone moving together without stepping on each others toes. It takes strong leadership to make it all work.

The hospital administrator is key in drafting policy. That policy provides the guide lines for the operation of the hospital and its various departments. It's hard to say whether implementing policy or adapting policy as medicine and business changes is a bigger part of the job. Either way, it's never boring.

For an incredibly stressful job, being a hospital administrator can be incredibly rewarding. Modern day medicine is a business, however it's the business of caring for other human beings. So, beyond the every day fight to balance policy, budget, and staffing, a hospital administrator is essential in making a huge care giving organization function.
