Lollipops: Something For Everybody

By Lucia W. Thomson

Modern lollipops can be purchased in a variety of styles and innovations. Size is a factor as well in designing suckers, ranging from suckers smaller than pennies in diameter to treats that are big enough to hurt your jaws. The look and schemes of lollipops have done more changing in the last fifty years than they have since their first estimated appearance in Medieval times when sugar was boiled and hardened on a stick. Consumers today rarely find the once widespread rainbow swirl pops that were located in barber shops and stores in the fifties; fresher ideas and more improved shapes have swept the trade, almost erasing any proof that swirl pops once existed.

Traditional swirl pops are simply candy canes that are twisted in a circular motion and put on a stick. Bubble gum, chocolate, and liquid fillings are still the most popular interiors for lollipops currently; inventive tactics are nipping at the heels though, with light up centers and toys inside the candy. Ice cream pops are often neglected to be called lollipops, but most certainly are- these have been sold mainly by restaurants and franchises. Old fashioned vanilla portions on sticks that are dipped in chocolate are the most familiar ice cream pops. Technology has even crept into these sweet treats with the development of motorized bases to spin the sucker for you.

Obviously, pops with worm larvae, alcohol, and other insects are not intended for children, but aimed for adult purchases. Some suckers are remedial and utilized by the military for its abilities to quickly soak into the blood stream. Some sucker firms claim to be diet benefits although they are without the support of the FDA. While most suckers are child approachable, a select few remain for mature shoppers for fun and pranks. Suckers can be purchased concurring to almost anybody's preferences, thanks to enterprises that promote personalized lollipops. Several designs range from hilarious adult content to child pleasant, such as teddy bears or a favorite cartoon character.

Lollipops are nothing more than fancy shaped structures made from boiled sugar and corn syrup. All lollipops follow the same process of boiling, adding pigment, and then flavors until the step to shape- few are put in molds, while others are shaped and cut. Exactly when and how lollipops were created is not concrete, though most researchers at least believe the term derived from 'lolly', which means tongue, and 'pop', which translates to slap.

Almost everywhere candy bars are sold, lollipops are merchandised beside them. Little has changed in the last few centuries as far as boiling sugar and syrup is involved, which are the two main components in lollipops. The main factors of this work include expediency, design, and taste. Lollipops are often found by registers in the front of businesses simply because they are a great item to grab just because you see it, the sucker looks delicious, and you must have it immediately. Sometimes, a lollipop is a must have quick fix- whether you're in need of a boost of energy or a treat for an irritated child, you are ensured to enjoy these indulgences fully, with their wonderful taste and quick boosts of vigor.
